Elizabeth Eaton Elected Bishop of ELCA Northeastern Ohio Synod

Voting members attending a special synod assembly on December 2 elected the Rev. Elizabeth Eaton to a six-year term as bishop of the Northeastern Ohio Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).

Pr. Eaton, pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church, Ashtabula, Ohio, was elected on the fifth ballot for bishop, 281-230 over the Rev. David P. Anderson, co-pastor of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Medina, Ohio.  On the fourth ballot, Eaton had received 233 votes, Anderson, 178, and the Rev. Jerome Burce, pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church, Fairview Park, 124 votes.

There were 41 names on the nominating ballot for bishop.  The Rev. Lowell Almen, Secretary of the ELCA, chaired the election.

Bishop-elect Eaton, 51, will succeed the Rev. Marcus J. Miller, who resigned August 1 to accept a call as president of Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, South Carolina.  The Rev. Lee M. Miller, former bishop of the ELCA Upstate New York Synod, has been serving as interim bishop since Bishop Marcus Miller’s departure, and will remain in the role until January 31, 2007.

The new bishop will be installed February 3, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul Episcopal Church in Akron, Ohio.  ELCA Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson will preside over the installation.

Rev. Eaton was born in Cleveland, Ohio.  In 1977, she earned a bachelor’s degree in Music Education from The College of Wooster.  She earned a master of divinity degree in 1980 from Harvard Divinity School.  Following ordination in 1981, Eaton served as assistant pastor at All Saints, Worthington, then as an interim pastor at Good Hope, Youngstown.  Her next call was as pastor at Messiah, Ashtabula in 1991 where she presently serves.

Eaton is married to Rev. Conrad Selnick, who is an Episcopal priest serving St. Christopher-By-The-River, Gates Mills, Ohio.  They are parents of 2 daughters, Rebeckah and Susannah.

The ELCA Northeastern Ohio Synod has 84,236 members in 205 congregations.  The synod office is located in Cuyahoga Falls.  Information about the Northeastern Ohio Synod can be found at www.neos-elca.org on the Web.
